Frequently Asked Questions
What age do children start school?
The age that children can start Kindergarten varies by state! Most states list their kindergarten cutoff date as September 1. That means that if your child turns 5 years old before September 1 of the upcoming school year they are eligible to attend.
Select your state below to see the specific requirements for kindergarten.
What is compulsory school attendance?
Compulsory school attendance refers to the ages at which each state requires students to be enrolled in and attending a public school or equivalent education program such as private school or homeschooling.
In most states compulsory attendance starts at either 5 or 6 depending on that state’s kindergarten cutoff dates. However, in Alaska, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, and Wyoming students are not required to start school until they are 7 years old. In two states – Pennsylvania and Washington – students are not required to be in school until they are 8 years old.
While most parents choose to start their children in kindergarten as soon as they meet the cutoff age requirements regardless of compulsory attendance ages, some may choose to wait to start their children in school until they are older if their state allows it.

When do I need to register/enroll?
In general, enrollment and registration for the upcoming school year starts in the spring. Some schools or districts – such as private schools or school choice programs – may have enrollment as early as November of the year before. You can reach out to your local school district or your school of choice for exact dates.
How do I enroll my child?
The short answer is, it depends on the type of school!
For traditional public schools, each school or district will have their own enrollment process. You may need to turn in paper copies of required documents and forms. More and more schools are turning to online portals and platforms to complete enrollment – your local school district’s website will have more information.
Public charter schools use an application process to fill any available seats at the school. If they receive more applications than they have seats available, they will hold a lottery to randomly select who is accepted. After acceptance families should follow their school’s instructions to complete the enrollment process.
Enrollment in a public magnet school is similar to that of a public charter school in that it begins with an application process. Schools will review the applications they receive to make sure that the students meet entrance and/or eligibility criteria. In some cases, an audition or portfolio of work may be required. After a student’s application has been accepted, families should follow their school’s instructions to complete the enrollment process.
If you are considering a private school, you will most likely need to complete an application process. This process may include meeting with the school, entrance exams, or even a trial visit to a classroom. Once your application has been accepted you will need to follow the school’s instructions to complete enrollment – this may include turning in all required documents and paying fees.
For families who want to homeschool their children, you may need to file a notice of intent with your state prior to beginning to homeschool. Some states require this to be done annually, some may only require it to be filed at the beginning of your homeschool journey, and others may not require formal notice at all. It is also a good idea to formally withdraw your child from their public school prior to beginning to homeschool.
Still Choosing a Type of School?
Traditional public schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online learning, homeschooling, and microschooling are the seven main forms of K-12 education options. Learn more about each type of school in our Ultimate Guides!
What paperwork is needed for enrollment?
The exact requirements of what you will need to enroll your child in school varies by state and school – you’ll need to reach out to your school for specific information. In general, the following information is required for enrollment in traditional public schools:
- Proof of residency – This could be a lease, utility bill with your current address on it, property tax statement, bank statement, drivers license, passport, or other government-issued ID. Your local school district will have a list of what is an acceptable proof of residency.
- Proof of your child’s birthday – The school will need documentation to confirm your child’s age to place them in the right grade. This could be your child’s birth certificate, adoption record, passport, or other approved documents.
- Health Records – State laws require that students have received specific immunizations in order to attend public schools and some districts may require a health assessment or physical.
- Parent/Guardian Photo Identification – This can be your drivers license, passport, or other government-issued ID.
- Transcripts – Students who are not enrolling in school for the first time may be required to provide transcripts from their previous schools.
- Required Forms – Each school or school district will have their own forms that must be completed for enrollment.
Other types of schools – such as public charter schools, public magnet schools, or private schools – may have additional requirements for enrollment. Public charter schools typically have an application that will need to be filled out, and magnet schools may require auditions or portfolios to be submitted prior to enrollment. Private schools may require interviews, entrance exams, and/or application fees.
What if I don’t have the required paperwork?
There may be special circumstances where you do not have the required paperwork for the enrollment process, but you can still have your child attend school. Two of the most common exceptions to paperwork requirements are related to residency and immunizations:
- Residency Exceptions – Federal law – the McKinney-Vento Act – allows children who do not have a fixed, regular residence to be enrolled in either the school district where they are temporarily living or the district in which they were enrolled previously.
- Immunization Exceptions: Some states allow exemption from immunization requirements in certain circumstances, you should reach out to your local school district to learn more.
If you find yourself without the required paperwork, reach out to the school or school district and they will guide you!
Do I need to enroll every year?
It depends on your school! For some schools you will need to fill out new paperwork each year, others may require you to simply update or indicate your intent to return, and for some you won’t need to do anything to secure your spot for another year. If you are unsure what you need to do you should reach out to your school or district for guidance.

Next Steps
Congratulations, you’ve completed the enrollment process! Like many families, you may be wondering what happens next. There may be a few weeks or even months between enrolling your child and their first day of school.
Here are some tips to make sure that your child is ready for the first day of school:
- Follow the school on your favorite social media platform. Many schools and districts share information about back to school, open houses, requirements, and the school calendar on their social pages. This is a great way to stay in the loop on what’s happening!
- Save the school calendar. Most schools will share the school calendar for the upcoming year in the fall or winter of the year before. Make sure you write down or add the important dates to your calendar.
- Attend open houses or curriculum nights. Lots of schools kick off their school year with an open house or back to school night. This is a great way to meet your child’s teachers, learn about drop-off and pick-up procedures, and make sure that you have everything set to go for the first day. Not sure what to ask or do at an open house? We’ve got a list of questions here.
- Introduce yourself to your child’s teacher. Once your child’s teacher assignment has been shared with you, introduce yourself! Sending a quick email to the teacher and sharing any information to help your child be successful is a great way to start building rapport. We’ve got a full list of how to partner with your child’s teacher on our website.
